We get it...

Just the thought of talking to your kids about sex is daunting. In a world that says it has to be this brutally-awkward-one-time-sit-down-sweaty-palm conversation...

Who would want to have “the talk”?!

Who would want to have “the talk”?!

But that doesn’t mean you can stick your head in the sand or go hide under a rock… even if you want to!
Most parents and care-givers know this topic is crazy important but can’t find the words to talk to their kids.

It’s like being asked to speak a foreign language with no training.  (Impossible!)
Plus… there’s a laundry list of ways this conversation could go tragically wrong…

You’re likely worried you will:

Mess it up - say something wrong, somehow scare your kids, or worse yet scar them.
Have to answer personal questions about your own sex life or sexual experiences (Ugh... TMI)
If you bring up this topic you are opening a can of worms that will prompt your kids to go have sex at a very early age.
Corrupt your kids.
Take away your kids innocence.

We get it… at this point, you’re afraid you’ll do more harm than good. But here’s the problem with avoiding this critical topic (actually there are several problems)…

Not equipping our children with this critical knowledge can lead to kids that:

  • Don’t Know How To Give Or Receive Consent Properly.
  • Are Less Likely To Be Protected Against Sexual Assault.
  • Don’t Understand How To Give Or Receive Rejection Properly.
  • Develop A Negative Body Image.
  • Have Guilt Or Shame About Sex Later In Life, Whether Or Not They Have Been Sexually Active.
  • Feel Shame Around Sex That Could Impact Their Relationships And Future Partner.

Here’s the reality… If you don’t have these critical conversations with your kids, someone else will!

And it will most likely be…
Their friends or The ‘Google’ YIKES!

Talk about a disaster waiting to happen.

Plus, one of the most critical reasons to start this conversation with your kids early is… YOU can become their go-to expert on all these challenging topics…  This is especially important if you want to increase the likelihood of their values aligning with yours!

Look… there’s NO JUDGEMENT HERE!

The bottom line is, for most of us, this experience wasn’t modeled well! So unfortunately we just default to what we do know and use the same method as our parents i.e. (avoid it, hand them a book, talk one time about “the birds & bees,” or use some version of scare tactics).

Growing up, as so many people experienced, no one really talked about sex. The message from parents was “just don’t have sex,” for others, it was “we don’t talk about that”.

That was it. There was no discussion, there was no education.

It sounded great at the time. Clean & easy. A neat little package, but it sure didn’t equip you as a parent with the knowledge or resources to have these critical conversations with your child.

What we know now is that not only does this approach not work, but more than that, the overarching message can leave a child feeling confused, and often filled with guilt and shame.

And frankly there are really no easy to consume resources out there that make this a simple process...

Most resources you’ll find are very clinical or talk about trauma related to sex, or speak from a psychological point of view, or only cover one piece of the puzzle.

But very few talk about normal scenarios, cover everything from A-Z, make it simple, include scripts or use audio or video to help you better understand how to navigate these conversations.

Instead, our culture sees this as a one-time, brutally painful and nerve-wracking conversation that has to be awkward… so unfortunately, oftentimes… IT IS!

You see, according to leading expert Peggy Orenstein this is how most parents feel about talking to their kids about sex…
“most parents would rather poke themselves in the eye with a fork than speak frankly to their child about sex. I can’t say that I blame them: It’s excruciating, and it’s not like our own parents offered a template.”

The good news… that was the old way of thinking, thankfully there’s a new approach that makes having “the talk” so natural and simple (without the cringe) - PROMISE!
Success comes down to SIMPLIFYING the process… because we all know that when we overcomplicate things, we simply tend to avoid them!
Plus it’s important to know exactly what you should say to your child at various stages of this conversation.

As you become the go-to expert, your child will come to YOU (rather than their friends or the internet) when they have questions and that makes all the difference.

It’s about having the strategic tools you need to have these conversations in the everyday moments of life, rather than pushing through the awkward sit down or asking them to read a book.

It all comes down to having an amazing relationship with your kids, and setting them up to make good decisions even when you’re not there to help navigate.

You have the opportunity to be the first one to make an impression on your kid and teach them what healthy sex looks like.

Now is the time to lay a strong foundation, through your values, so your kids will be ready to make good decisions about sex, relationships, and their bodies when the stakes get higher.

Together we have an opportunity to provide a different future for this next generation, when it comes to a healthy perspective about sex, body image and relationships.

We break down this process to make this EASY

Yes EASY (not terrifying or embarrassing) and we take out all of the guesswork around actually having “the talk” with your kids.

And don’t worry about if you think this ship has sailed, your kids are too old (or too young) or you’ve completely bombed this conversation in the past… we cover it all and will help you get back on track so both you and your kids can feel open and awesome about having ‘the talk’!

Hi! We are Shannon & Kristin...

Dr. Shannon Deer is an award winning professor and assistant dean at Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on sex education, sex trafficking, and recovery from sexual exploitation. Her study on the impact on adults of experiencing abstinence-only education in church as adolescence motivated her to start Oh. My. Word. Shannon's research has been published in leading international journals. She also has a book in the publication process providing strategies for supporting women who experienced sex trafficking situations. Shannon has won many different teaching awards for her innovative teaching of adults. Through her research experience, Shannon brings an evidence-based approach to the course.

HEAR FROM PARENTS JUST LIKE YOU!

I mostly parent the way I was raised, so in this general arena, I would be lying if I said I was educating and informing my kids well. OH MY WORD has empowered me as a mother to fill in the blanks of where my parents left off. Listening to this course made me feel like I was talking to two well-informed big sisters who just wanted to simply present the facts and leave me to insert my values. It wasn’t easy listening to sometimes uncomfortable topics, but doing the hard work as a parent never is. In the short time I’ve listened, I already feel more confident in taking the tiny moments to engage and inform my kids. I can’t wait to get my husband to listen too!
- Natalie R.
I have absolutely loved “The Talk”. As an RN I assumed I had a pretty good handle on everything that I needed to speak to my son & daughter about, but boy was I wrong! The course does a great job providing evidence based research along with much needed comic relief all throughout. The videos show how easily any uncomfortable conversation can be brought up & how to say the uncomfortable facts. The course does a great job of not stepping on anyone’s values, but instead focuses on the facts!
- alici c.
So thorough, honest, and practical, Oh. My. Word. has given me much to think about and discuss with my co-parent and especially, my 3 little ones! I found the entire course to be engaging and tailored to help me navigate an aspect of parenting that is so crucial! It is rare that we, as parents, get a workbook on how to do this thing called parenting, but Oh. My. Word. literally wrote out the script to follow in some instances. I have already found myself having more honest and open conversations with my kids about their bodies, relationships, and sex. I cannot recommend this enough for any other parents out there! They say it takes a village and I hope my whole village will use Oh. My. Word. so we can have impact on our own and each others' kids, as they are the future!

You've Asked... And We've Answered!

Is there a way to talk to my kids about sex without it being awkward?
The good news is that after you start Not. The. Talk. talking to your kids about sex does not have to be awkward or complicated for either of you! We will help you move away from the idea that we have one big conversation, and into the idea that many frequent casual conversations will help us break down "the talk" into bite sized conversations.
In fact, studies show talking to your kids about sex can strengthen the parent-child bond. So, using Not. The. Talk to help you talk to your kids about sex is actually a way to create a stronger relationship with them for life and eliminate the awkward.
What if my child is too young?

The earlier you start naturally working these conversations in, the better. With Not. The. Talk. you can start today, even if your kids are in diapers or middle school. After all, they start learning their bodies on the changing table! We will help you start talking to them about important topics early like their bodies and appropriate touch. We will move through the later years with you, with puberty and wet dreams. The earlier you start, the more naturally the conversations will grow as they grow!

What if my kids are too old?

Fear not! It's never too late. Okay, if they're walking down the aisle and you haven't had "the talk" yet....it might be too late. But otherwise, Not. The. Talk. will help you pick up the conversation regardless of how old they are. You are not alone. Most parents feel that their kids are too young to learn about sex. We don't want to believe that our babies are growing up! You may have to make up for some lost time, but it's never too late to start having these critical conversations with them.
Is Not. The. Talk. based on your opinions or facts?

Shannon's expertise is research, specific to sex education and recovery from sexual exploitation. So everything you hear in Not. The. Talk. is evidence-based, rock-solid and up-to-date research-based information. Though you will get to know us and our individual personalities as you move through Not. The. Talk., we decided early on that we didn't want our personal opinions to cloud the course or get in the way of our learners. Only you can decide what is best for your family and we would never want to presume otherwise!
What if I never get the hang of talking to casually with my kids about sex?
You and every other parent! You are not alone in this, and that is why we built Not. The. Talk. in the first place. Most generations have not done this conversation well. Parents don't avoid "the talk" because they don't care, but because they don't have the language to be able to talk to their kids. But now they do! We promise you will leave the course feeling confident and ready to start changing the language for your kids, and for the generations to come.
What if I tried talking to my kids about sex and I messed it up?

We've got you! We have heard it all - kids run away, scream, cry - when parents have tried to talk to their kids about sex without taking Not. The. Talk. In Not. The. Talk., we give you the words you need for a redo. You can back up and build slowly to a solid foundation where you and your children are comfortable talking about sex. We provide dialogue, written scripts, anatomy graphics, and animated video examples of what it looks like to have confident, comfortable, frequent conversations with your children related to their bodies and sex.
What if my kids don’t want to talk to me about sex or refuse to listen when I try to engage in the conversation?

When you take Not. The. Talk., you will get tools for starting the conversations small and continuing to build on the foundation you are laying. With our approach, your kids will start to open up. Especially, if you are starting the conversation when they are older (over the age of six), it may take some time for them to open up, so we help you start small and quickly build up to where you need to be.
Even if your kids feel awkward at first, they do want to hear from you about sex. Research shows kids do want their parents to talk to them about "a wide range of topics related to sex, and believe these discussions should be early and often" Pariera & Brody (2018). We give you the resources to talk to your kids early and often in short, casual conversations.
What if I have never talked to my kids about sex?

You will feel right at home with us in Not. The. Talk. We will meet you where you are in these conversations. We will take you from the very beginning all the way through the heavy hitting conversations that crop up by middle school. The Readiness component of our Readiness. Facts. Honesty framework will help you assess what level of conversation your child needs. We provide you the tools wherever your child is so you can bring the conversation they need today and in the future.
What if I have talked to my kids about childbirth, and even a little about intercourse, but I have not talked about some of the heavier conversations?
There’s a lot more to “the talk” than just sex. We have talked to A LOT of parents about this topic, both before and after completing Not. The. Talk. A majority of the parents we have interviewed initially thought they had talked to their kids about sex, but later realized that there is so much more to the story than teaching their kids about intercourse. One thing they all had in common was that they all later realized they weren't doing quite as good of a job of having these difficult conversations as they had initially believed. Not. The. Talk. has truly transformed "the talk" from a nerve-wracking-sweaty-palm-conversation to a relaxed and normal part of everyday life for these families. They realized that if they could master THIS conversation, then they could talk to their kids about anything!
Is this a religious course?

No. Though Shannon and I are both believers, but this is not a Christian-based course. For one, we wanted this to help all families, not only families of one particular faith. And two, we know that values within the church are vastly different. Even Shannon and I, who were born into the same family don't agree on everything (okay, maybe quite a lot). But guess what? That's okay! We found a way to present the facts to families and then help them determine their own values. It's a beautiful thing!
Is Not. The. Talk. for kids?

No! We would never presume to know your personal values when it comes to sex. Not. The. Talk. is directed only toward you, as a parent, though you may find that some of the audio or animated videos would be helpful for your kids to view at your discretion. But ultimately, no one will do a better job of teaching your kids than YOU!
Won’t my kids learn everything they need to know about sex in school?
Kids learn a lot about sex in school, but they typically learn it from their uninformed friends and not from health teachers.  Unfortunately, the sex education provided in American schools is nearly non-existent, especially in abstinence-only states. You are the best resource for your kids as the burden falls on the family to talk about sex.

What if I want to take the course but don’t really have time?
We know how busy parents are, and we specifically designed the course with this in mind. Not. The. Talk. was created to meet parents where they are...whether it's while sitting in the carpool line, while driving to work, just before going to bed, on the treadmill, while vacuuming the rug... whenever and wherever! In fact, the busier you are, the more time you will have to listen!

How long do I have access to the course?
You have unlimited course access!  The course will never expire! We want parents to be able to listen to the course and then reference back as needed anytime! After enrolling, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own.
When does the course start and finish?
The course starts now and you can complete it at your own pace - you decide when to start and when to finish.
Plus, you’ll always have Not.The.Talk in your back pocket as an incredible resource as your child grows and matures, so you always feel prepared and confident about the NEXT ‘sex topic’ conversation or question!
Can’t I just buy a book and give it to my child to read (or to read with them)? Why do I need to take a course?
There are no books in the world that can communicate your family’s values about sex to your kids. Taking Not. The. Talk. will help you determine your values and communicate them to your children. They won’t be armed with just the facts. They will be armed with what you believe as well.
Will I make my kids feel guilt and shame about sex if I talk to them about it?

We have revolutionized "the talk" and leave guilt & shame in the past when it comes to talking to our kids about sex! In our course, we will show you alternative ways to talk to your kids about sex, designed to prevent them from experiencing guilt and shame, while also making good choices for themselves later in life. We are turning the "old way" on its head. Framing sex in a bad light and using scare tactics are a thing of the past!
Do I have to sit down and tell my kid everything about sex?

Not all at once! A fellow sex educator, LeAnne Gardner says that talking to kids about sex is not one big event, it’s 300 one-minute conversations. When you take Not. The. Talk. you will have all the resources you need to have these conversations casually and frequently, like talking with your kids about what they want for dinner.
